We have been to the Galápagos Islands on Christmas/New year 2007/2008. Our Trip lead us first to Isabella Island which is the biggest of the archipelago. As you are not allowed to visit the interesting sites on your own, we hired a guide for a few excursions.
One excursion led us to the Sierra Negra volcano. This volcano has got one of the biggest calderas of the world. It measures 7x10km but is only 100-140m deep. The bottom of the caldera consists of black lava. You reach to the crater from the southern side first with a car and then on horses (or mules?). This is the windward side and it is often covered with clouds and mist. The humidity leads to a lavish vegetation which is not quite common to the Galápagos islands. Riding on a horse at the slopes of the volcano makes you think that you won't get a glimpse of a volcano that day. But once fallen over edge of the crater the clouds evaporate on the hot surface of the black caldera.

We then went on a crusade on the yacht "Floreana". This boat offers space for 16 guests, six crew members and a guide.
The program within these eight days was quite full. Every day two or three excursions are being made and you go snorkeling two times a day. After three days you hardly know where you have been. Afterwards it is merely impossible to tell where you have taken all your pictures. I used a GPS-receiver and geo-tagged all my pictures when I came home. You can make a in GoogleEarth and look at the pictures from the .
Going snorkeling you will have spectacular encounters with white tip riff sharks, sea turtles and rays. But most fun of all are the sea lions. They are playful, curious and don't show any fear at all.

Talking about pictures:
Whatever you think is necessary in rolls of film or storage: That won't be enough! I shot about 4500 frames in two weeks. So make a good guess what you need for your trip and multiply that number by two or three. In the end you may be lucky and it proved to be sufficient...
